A guide to dressing smart with a watch
While we may no longer rely on a watch for its utility like we used to, it remains an essential part of our everyday ensemble. Most would feel naked without a watch on their wrist, while many look to it to complete their look.
“For the individual who does not like wearing a lot of accessories or is a minimalist dresser, watches are a great way to enhance or level up an ensemble,” says stylist Sarah Saw who has overseen numerous photoshoots for watch brands and publications.
Despite the prevailing flexibility in style and fashion, there are still certain rules to abide by if you don’t want to end up looking ridiculous or trying too hard. Saw offers a few tips on keeping a sensible yet stylish approach to wearing watches.
The do's and don'ts
“As with fashion, too much can be just that—too much! Wearing a watch should be a lifestyle, not a fashion show. Match colourful/printed/statement watches with a more subtle look, for instance, neutral tones and minimal prints. The goal is to look effortless and not stand out like a sore thumb. Be mindful to always dress for the occasion and take a good look in the mirror. If something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t.”
