A perennial favourite, the chronograph watch has never been more coveted than now

The story of the chronograph is one of daring feats and adventure, as it frequently accompanies explorers, aviators, and athletes as they go after one remarkable achievement after another. The chronograph's multifaceted nature, transcending simple timekeeping to encompass stopwatch functionality, has imbued it with a distinct allure.

One never ever encounters a lack of chronograph options year after year, particularly in 2023—Grand Seiko even launched its first mechanical chronograph, the Tentagraph, in March. With such a rich variety available, we’ve distilled the list down to five that should be on your radar right now.

The 40.5m case of the new Chopard Mille Miglia is crafted in sustainable Lucent Steel which is 50 per cent harder than steel. The green of the dial reflects the colour of the bodywork of the Verde Chiaro automobile. The central seconds hand has a red tip for better visibility, which is also true for the rest of the dial, thanks to the use of a glass box sapphire crystal.

The Tag Heuer Monaco, the first water-resistant chronograph in a square case, has been updated in French racing blue and hints of lime yellow. The sunray-brushed silver dial recalls the engine-turned dashboard of sports cars in the 1920s and 1930s. Powered by the automatic Calibre 11, the 39mm case in titanium also features a caseback engraved with the limited edition “One of 1000”.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Ocean Race, official timekeeper Ulysse Nardin has created a special-edition chronograph in 44mm sandblasted black DLC titanium case with a sapphire crystal caseback that reveals calibre UN-150. The sandblasted black dial is framed by a bezel finished in Carbonium, which contains fibres upcycled from aeroplane fuselage offcuts. The Carbonium produces a unique marbled effect. Ulysse Nardin is the first manufacture to use this material on a timepiece back in 2019. Limited to 100 pieces, it comes with a rubber strap with a black ceramic element engraved with The Ocean Race logo.
