The Chinese actress’s Christopher Bu gown stole the show, but the star also served other equally dramatic looks by other Asian designers last month

Fan Bingbing knows how to do Cannes right. A veteran at the film festival, the Chinese actress shone on the red carpet this year in 15 different looks in 11 days.

While each ensemble flattered her perfectly, it’s awesome to see Fan choosing to spotlight Asian designers through the gowns she wore to the event, which included Christopher Bu, Miss Sohee and Cheney Chan.

“I tend to lean towards new or niche labels,” Fan wrote in a recent Instagram post. “The reason behind this choice is my love for exploring bold experimentation with different styles and trends.”

Here we look at the Asian designers that caught the star’s attention.

1. Christopher Bu

This isn’t the first time Fan wore Bu to Cannes. In 2011, the actress walked the opening ceremony’s red carpet in a scarlet gown embroidered with white cranes by Bu. Not only that, Chinese designer also said in an interview with Jing Daily in 2013 that she’s the one who had encouraged him to open his own label.

Bu designs both ready-to-wear lines inspired by his travels and couture collections heavily influenced by elements of Chinese culture. A stunning example of this is the opulent tiger-and-bamboo motif gown that Fan wore this year to the premiere of the historical film starring Johnny Depp, Jeanne du Barry.

2. Miss Sohee

London-based South Korean designer Sohee Park founded her couturier Miss Sohee in 2020, and it became an instant hit on social media thanks to her fantastical floral gowns and larger-than-life creations that incorporate a mix of colours, crystals, feathers, bows and luxurious fabrics. She counts the likes of Gemma Chan, Blackpink’s Lisa and Jisoo, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Miley Cyrus among her clients.

For the Women’s Stories gala at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Fan paired an embellished floral top with a skirt, and added a flowing chiffon cape and sculptural headpiece from Miss Sohee’s spring-summer 2023 collection.

3. Chung Thanh Phong

Vietnamese designer Chung Thanh Phong has an eye for merging edgy silhouettes with glamorous embellishments.

For this year’s Cannes, Fan chose not one, but two of his creations: the first was a dramatic metallic gold gown inspired by butterfly wings; and the second was a champagne and silver figure-hugging number inspired by waves, which accentuated her shoulders and hips.

4. Cheney Chan

Cheney Chan is an up-and-coming Chinese couturier whose designs celebrate the beauty of Chinese elements such as bamboo trees, flowers, Chinese pagodas and more.

Fan is the first major celebrity to wear his clothing, and she looked resplendent in the pale blue strapless gown with delicate embellishments of clouds and a dragon, which she paired with a lush aqua sash. The traditional elements contrasted nicely against the structured neckline and sleek column silhouette, which gave the ensemble a touch of modernity.

5. Harvey Cenit

UAE-based Filipino designer Harvey Cenit made an impact in the fashion industry when he won season three of Fashion Factor (2022), the biggest fashion competition in the Middle East. His striking and sensual designs embrace the softness of flowing skirts, romantic necklines and playful yet elegant details.

This is the first time one of his pieces was worn at Cannes: Fan chose a pristine-white asymmetrical long-sleeve gown with a 3D feline head adorning her left shoulder for a gala dinner. Meow that’s a bold choice.
