See all the celebrity brides who tied the knot in a Chanel wedding dress over the years

The “Chanel bride” has earned a legendary reputation on the runway. Few models command as much attention as the one who closes Chanel’s haute couture fashion show in a breathtaking wedding dress—a tradition started by none other than former Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Since the late ‘80s, the honour of being a Chanel bride has been reserved for fashion’s It-girls, ranging from models like Claudia Schiffer, Cara Delevingne and Linda Evangelista, to Chanel’s celebrity friends like Kendall Jenner and Lily-Rose Depp. But, over the years, the tradition has also gone beyond the runway, thanks to an array of glamorous celebrities like Sofia Richie and Lily Allen who have tied the knot as real-life Chanel brides.

Below, we take a look of some of the famous brides who chose to wear a Chanel wedding dress on their big day.

The most talked-about Chanel bride of the moment is Sofia Richie, who recently tied the knot with music executive Elliot Grainge at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.

The model and influencer walked down the aisle in a custom Chanel bridal gown from the French fashion brand’s fall/winter 2023 collection, designed by Virginie Viard. The sleeveless dress, which Richie described as “magic”, was crafted from lace and sequins, and spilled out into a dramatic train. Her veil, attached to her chignon, was just as long. Richie’s Chanel dress also featured a lace halter neckline, proving, once again, the popularity of high necklines (both Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Biden famously championed this bridal trend at their own weddings recently).

Richie’s wedding dress is just one of three custom Chanel looks that she wore for her marriage ceremony. For the wedding rehearsal dinner, Richie arrived in another high-neck gown, this time with long sleeves, elaborate beading and fringed cuffs and hems. After exchanging her vows, Richie dressed down for the after-party in a white minidress inspired by the one worn by Claudia Schiffer at the brand’s fall/winter 1993 haute couture show. The flirty look features a structured bodice adorned with Chanel’s favourite flower, the camellia.

Keira Knightley opted for a whimsical bridal look for her wedding with British musician and Klaxons singer James Righton in 2013. On her big day, the Pride & Prejudice actress wore a strapless tulle dress from Chanel’s spring/summer 2006 haute couture collection. Knightley’s wedding dress was a surprising choice for many reasons: it came in pale grey, not white, and it featured a knee-length hemline. Not to mention that the dress wasn’t even new—Knightley was first spotted wearing it at a pre-Bafta party in 2008.

Nonetheless, she pulled off the sustainable wedding look, completing it with a flower crown, Chanel ballet pumps, and a custom white tweed jacket designed by Karl Lagerfeld.

Knightley re-wore her Chanel dress at a red carpet event in 2013, styling it with a sheer bodysuit and Jimmy Choo strappy sandals. If one wonders what became of the dress, it was later reported that it was accidentally destroyed after a friend of Knightley’s spilled wine on it.

3. Lily Allen

Although she picked a Dior dress when she tied the knot with Stranger Things actor David Harbour in 2020, Lily Allen had chosen to wed in Chanel years earlier. In 2011, the British singer wore a custom Chanel haute couture dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself for her wedding to Sam Cooper. The look, which Allen wore in a private reception, was only revealed when Lagerfeld, via the Chanel website, shared a sketch of the dress as well as a photograph of Allen being fitted for it at Chanel’s Paris atelier. True to Allen’s eclectic personality, her Chanel wedding gown featured sheer mutton sleeves and an empire waistline that then-pregnant singer could comfortably move around in. In an interview, Allen revealed that the dress was worth around £200,000 (S$333,000).

4. Charlotte Casiraghi

All eyes were on Charlotte Casiraghi when she exchanged her vows with French film producer Dimitri Rassam at their royal wedding in Monaco in 2019. Casiraghi is the granddaughter of Grace Kelly, the former Princess of Monaco, and she certainly lived up to the style standards set by her famous relative. She opted for an ivory silk gown that was inspired by a look from Chanel’s spring/summer 2019 collection, one of Lagerfeld’s final collections for the brand. The strapless dress was the perfect choice for showing off her grandmother’s Cartier diamond necklace, and it only emphasised Casiraghi’s longstanding relationship with Chanel. In 2020, the Chanel muse was officially named as brand ambassador for the French fashion house.

5. Poppy Delevingne

Poppy Delevingne’s 2014 wedding with James Cook was a splashy affair, and her bridal dress certainly deserved the spotlight. The British model and socialite had tapped on her friend Karl Lagerfeld to create a look inspired by a dress from Chanel’s spring/summer 2009 haute couture collection. The result was a breathtaking sheer lace gown with cap sleeves and a long train, further embellished with floral appliqués and bead embroidery. Cara Delevingne, who was there to support her sister, fittingly wore a white Chanel bridesmaid dress.
