You might be tempted to chop your locks after watching “Spencer”, but before your do, we spoke to a professional about how you can modernise the look

What made Princess Diana’s hairstyle so memorable? It’s a combination of things: All the volume, the depth of layers and the fact that her short, lush locks made her appear so youthful.

Elements of her haircut are in fashion now, particularly the “shag” look, so how can you personalise it for your style? We spoke to Tash Newman, senior stylist at Love Hair, to learn more about the dos and don’ts.

“Face shape is extremely important when cutting any haircut, but most importantly short hair. If the hair cut is wrong for the face shape it will throw the whole look off and might be unflattering,” she explains.

“For a square face, selecting a haircut to soften those features is essential for a flattering appearance. I would complement the bone structure with a side parting,” Newman says, adding: “Rounded face shapes will benefit from a choppy pixie cut, which would add definition and shape to the face, and for oval faces, I would typically go for a blunt bob or lob with subtle layers.”

What about achieving Diana’s gravity defying volume? “The Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity spray and Powderpuff work great for volume and hold, and lots of hairspray is necessary to keep the hairstyle in place!”

What are some of the mistakes people make with having short hair, and how can you avoid them? “Short hair requires more maintenance. To keep it fresh, I would recommend getting your hair cut regularly (every 4-6 weeks) to keep in style and manageable.”
