Here’s what you missed: She Loves Tech is a global programme that funds women-led tech start-ups that was founded by Leanne Robers, Rhea See and Virginia Tan in 2015. The programme elevates women in tech by highlighting the latest innovations built by women and by maintaining a database for women-led start-ups to connect founders, investors and more. Today, the organisation is considered the largest acceleration platform for women and technology.

“There are a lot of women founders out there, they’re just not given the opportunity or the platform to go global,” said See during her welcome speech.

It is also the organiser of one of the world’s largest start-up competitions, and the Hong Kong edition took place on June 21 at PMQ. The theme for this year’s She Loves Tech 2023 Hong Kong & Macau Pitch Competition & Conference, held in partnership with Tatler Hong Kong, the MTR Corporation, Swire Group, Invest Hong Kong and others, was Metamorphosis.

After welcoming speeches from the founders, the event kicked off with opening remarks by Jayne Chan, head of Invest Hong Kong’s StartmeupHK programme, who highlighted the city’s diverse start-up ecosystem.

This was followed by a panel discussion on women’s journeys working within predominantly male-dominated industries. The panel was moderated by Robers and See, and featured trailblazers in the tech industry: Maaike Steinebach, founder and CEO of venture investment firm Femtech Futures; Nicole Denholder, co-founder of financial education platform Sophia; Katy Yung, managing partner at Sustainable Finance Initiative; and Samantha Woods, sustainability director at Swire Coca-Cola.

Afterwards, Stephanie Tan, founder and CEO of wellness brand Nooci, and Li Hua Tan, co-founder of investment group Audacy Ventures and whisky-market-focused venture capital firm Rare Whisky Holdings, stepped onto the stage to talk about the crucial relationship between funders and founders. Sharon Lim, chief content officer of She Loves Tech, then shared pointers on how to come to terms with failure.

Finally, ten finalists pitched their Hong Kong-based start-ups ideas—including sustainable shoes, cancer research and the use of AI in cooking—for the competition portion of the event. Choi Pui-wah, founder of WomenX Biotech Limited, a women’s health-focused start-up, was declared the winner, who will proceed to the global finals, which take place at the She Loves Tech Global Conference 2023 in Singapore in October. Choi was followed by Natalie Chow, CEO of upcycled sneakers brand Kibo, and Yolanda Au, director and co-founder of RaSpect Intelligence Inspection Limited, an AI-powered software platform for safety inspection in built infrastructure, in second and third places respectively.

She Loves Tech 2023 Hong Kong & Macau Pitch Competition & Conference wrapped up with drinks at PMQ’s Gustaci Pizzalounge. Congratulations to the organisers for another fantastic event, the participants for a day well spent in the company of such inspiring women, and to the winners, of course!
