From icy expanses to extreme heat, Range Rover’s first-ever all-electric model is undergoing rigorous testing to ensure unmatched performance

Big things are in store for Range Rover—for one, the brand is about to release its first all-electric vehicle, Range Rover Electric. But before its release, the prototype will go through rigorous global testing in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

Executive director for product engineering Thomas Mueller shares: “We are well underway with our physical testing and development programme, all designed to push Range Rover Electric to the extremes to ensure its capability remains unparalleled.”

The all-electric drivetrain will undergo various tests that focus on the capability of its battery and Electric Drive Unit (EDU). The latter comprises the vehicle’s core components such as the transmission, electric motor and power electronics. To test its capabilities and ensure its reliability in diverse climates, the vehicle has been put through extreme temperatures ranging from as low as -40 degrees Celsius in the Arctic Circle to as high as 50 degrees Celsius in the deserts of the Middle East.

The vehicle has also been through frozen lakes in Sweden, testing its new in-house all-electric propulsion system. Its new Advanced Traction Control System redefines stability on icy and low-grip surfaces by distributing the wheel slip management task to individual electric drive control units. This helps to reduce the torque reaction time with each wheel from around 100 milliseconds to as little as one millisecond, significantly enhancing the Range Rover drive experience.

Its innovative software which has been developed in-house by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) enables precise EDU speed control, allowing for accurate management of wheel slip and reducing the need for anti-lock braking system (ABS) intervention.

With its extensive testing, the newest Range Rover Electric is set to offer us an effortlessly smooth, refined and luxurious driving experience.
