今天是一年一度的世界閱讀日(World Book & Copyright Day),你有多久沒靜下心來認真看一本書了呢?

4 月 23 日是聯合國教科文組織(UNESCO)訂定的「世界閱讀日」,許多出版社、圖書館等單位都會紛紛展開一連串活動來一起響應這盛大節日。隨著網路發達與智慧型手機的普及,書籍、紙本雜誌不再是唯一可以獲得資訊新知的管道,不過它的溫度仍是無可替代,希望在這天提倡閱讀的重要性,本篇將帶你深入了解其由來和背後意義!

為什麼是選在 4 月 23 日?

4 月 23 日是個別具意義的日子,當初聯合國教科文組織把這天訂為世界閱讀日可不是拿著農民曆看好日子,而是因為這一天是文豪莎士比亞(William Shakespeare)、西班牙知名作家塞凡提斯(Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra)、中國南宋理學家朱熹的逝世日。除此之外,其實還有許多文學家都恰巧在這天出生或過世,他們都擁有舉足輕重的地位,為了緬懷這幾位偉大的文學作家,並頌揚他們的豐功偉業與貢獻,因此特別選在此日。

慶祝活動的由來?

每個全球性的重大節日都有相關慶祝活動,就連世界閱讀日也不例外,雖然每個國家地區各自有不同的歡慶活動,但它的慶祝起源其實與西班牙加泰隆尼亞「聖喬治節」(Sant Jordi)有關。

聖喬治節即為 4 月 23 日,據了解,聖喬治節的由來有各種說法,例如有一位名叫 Saint George 的英雄,傳說他為了拯救在敵軍惡龍手中的公主,努力奮戰到最後一刻擊敗對方,戰勝後還使用龍的血液做成玫瑰花送給公主。不過在英格蘭地區,這天則為國慶日,因為基督教殉道聖人聖喬治就是在這天逝世。

另一說是在西班牙這節日的存在等同於西洋情人節,對於當地居民來說意義非凡,習俗上會贈送玫瑰花束給心儀的對象或心愛的人,而回禮便是送一本書,間接帶動書籍的銷量。

事實上,世界閱讀日的正式名稱為「世界圖書與版權日」,這天除了提倡閱讀和寫作的重要性外,還有希望藉著這節日喚起大眾對於「版權」的意識。
