The demands of daily life can sometimes feel overwhelming, which may lead us to forget to care for our own well-being. So how can we make it work? Five Gen.T honourees share their tips

October 10 is World Mental Health Day—but the point isn’t to celebrate it once a year. It’s to adopt and maintain a sustainable habit of being aware of our own well-being while trying to navigate the demands of everyday life.

Mental health isn’t just the absence of illness, it’s about fostering resilience, maintaining balance and seeking support when needed.

Globally, one in eight people live with a mental disorder, according to the World Health Organisation in 2022. This can greatly impact their physical health, well-being, emotional connections with others and livelihoods. The WHO, however, revealed that countries, on average, dedicate less than two percent of their healthcare budgets to mental health.

So how can we look out for ourselves and those around us? From a concert pianist to a social entrepreneur, five Gen.T honourees share their personal tips on juggling a hectic lifestyle and taking care of their health.

“The very thing that sustains me and gives me reason for life, music, is also the very thing that tires me because it’s my work. Staying well is about first connecting to principles and never losing the core reason that I make music, which is love itself.

“Other things that help me stay balanced are finding and connecting with people who inspire, meditating or recharging in nature, and exercising to get into a state of flow and connection with body and mind.”

“To prepare myself mentally for my weekly races, I take 10 minutes a day to step back, realise where I am at, and reflect on my achievements and how I am doing. It’s so important to be appreciative.”

Build a support system outside work

“Everyone says there is a need to talk openly and without judgement. Further to that, I think it’s just as important to find the right person to talk to. So find a friend, confidante or advisor—someone who sees you over your journey and carves out a structured time for you to chat.

“Have a great group of supporters. They are your cheerleaders. I’m so happy I have my family and two young kids around. Family relationships take work but that keeps me grounded. If not family, it’s important to find a group of solid relationships or hobby groups that takes you away from the day-to-day grind and gives you opportunities for laughter and joy.”

Set boundaries and learn to be present

“Having a tribe of mentors and fellow founders to learn from and brainstorm problems really helps me. Mentors are people who help to see the problems because they’ve been there and done that. Fellow founders are fighting the same battles and can empathise with you.

“Outside of work, I make it a point to take time for myself. I detach from work and fully immerse myself in an activity I enjoy. It can be activities like exercise, cooking and board games. Most founders think of their work 24/7, so I have learnt to compartmentalise and be present in the activities to help to keep persistent thoughts away.”

“People tend to forget that it is absolutely necessary to spend time with yourself. Don’t feel the pressure to do what others say you should. For example, going out or hanging out when you really need a break. Everyone deserves some self-care and me-time—especially if you want to recharge and re-align yourself.”
