Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road is the second coolest street in the world, according to global lifestyle publication Time Out’s latest pronouncement on the subject. In addition to art galleries, antique shops and heritage sites, this street, which stretches between Central and Sheung Wan, has a host of restaurants, bars and cafés that go to justify its ranking. While many spots such as the two-Michelin-starred Tate Dining Room are longstanding fixtures that residents fondly associate with the area, there’s also been a surge of new venues like Maggie Choo’s that add to the locale’s richness.

1. Man Mo Dim Sum

Man Mo Dim Sum offers a unique selection of fusion dim sum that draws from international flavours. From beef bourguignon and shakshuka dumplings to Mexican fish taco baos, this eatery offers true east-meets-west fare. 2. Lockdown

Lockdown, founded by Indonesian bar veterans Agung and Laura Prabowo of Penicillin and Dead&, is a new speakeasy-inspired cocktail bar that opened in February. With an unassuming toilet in the front window and a rotating bar station within, it offers an intimate space for only 30 guests at a time. The menu is divided into three different categories—Experimental, Vintage and Remastered—with drinks made using the latest technology and trends in mixology. Asian-inspired bites are also available to order.

3. Tate Dining Room

Tate Dining Room remains one of the city’s top fine dining venues for a decade, with chef Vicky Lau combining French and Chinese flavours to create an unforgettable dining experience. 4. Hjem

Enjoy a hot beverage and a dose of hygge (a Danish word that means a sense of comfort resulting in overall contentedness) at Hjem, Hollywood Road’s Nordic haven. Delectable coffee, warming tea and a rich hot chocolate are some of the café’s offerings, as well as warm bites, sweet treats and a selection of traditional smørrebrød: open-faced sandwiches with cold toppings including smoked fish, crisp vegetables and crème fraîche. The café also hosts Thursday Book Club, a bibliophile event in tandem with mobile secondhand book shop Gentle Books.

5. Corks Wine & Bar

Corks Wine & Bar combines the casual nature of drinking outdoors with the elegance of a refined selection of red, white and rosé wines from across France—to order by the glass or bottle. With a small selection of seating available indoors, more often than not patrons will spill outside onto the corner of Hollywood and Lok Ku Road to drink, chat and nibble on cheese and charcuterie from Tuesday to Sunday.

6. Yuan

Modern Chinese fine dining gets a vegetarian spin at the recently opened Yuan, which features allium-free tasting menus available for lunch and dinner. The crisp, white space reflects the calm and wholesome approach to its use of seasonal produce, and executive chef Ronald Shao transforms ingredients such as mushrooms, root vegetables and tofu into innovative and beautifully presented dishes.

7. Maggie Choo’s

On the outside, Maggie Choo’s Hong Kong blends in to look like one of the many antique shops on Hollywood Road, but inside is a cabaret-inspired bar with an antique-style bank vault door and iron spiral staircases. With plush seating to lounge and sip drinks on, and an open dance floor to twirl away till late, the bar has founder Ashley Sutton’s (of Iron Fairies fame) signature touch—high attention to detail to supplement his visual storytelling about a space.

8. Chachawan

The quirky wallpaper, upcycled wooden stools and rustic decor make for a relaxed dining experience at Thai restaurant Chachawan, while the menu offers a range of traditional northern Thai dishes plus some more creative approaches to the cuisine. Cocktails are infused with classic Thai ingredients to pair perfectly with the meal, taking the edge off spicier dishes such as the moo manaw—spicy pork with lime salad—and som dtum goong—green papaya salad with prawn.
